Lacewing and shield lichen. During her research de Villiers came across a 2020 study of lichen mimesis in mid-Mesozoic lacewings — lichens imitating insects rather than insects imitating plants. The branching patterns of the insects’ wing markings fit those of the lichen, suggesting lichen mimicry was an effective survival strategy in the age of the dinosaurs.
