Re-rooting 2021

Re-rooting — Celia de Villiers
Re-rooting — Cement bag, denim, chiffon & guipure lace · A3 (approx. 30 × 42 cm)

Since uprooting herself and relocating to Europe, de Villiers has lived in homes under renovation, converting ancient buildings into an artist’s retreat. The masculine environment and materials around her called for some feminising: this small work sets old denim — the workwear Levi Strauss made deliberately for labouring men — against a weathered cement bag, softened with chiffon and a snippet of guipure lace. It is the first of a new series she is beginning on her stack of weathered cement sacks.
