A small periodic stimulus that echoes back — like a Pandora’s Box.Celia de Villiers

A resonance is a small periodic stimulus that echoes back, the way a pipe increases its sonority by repeatedly vibrating; embedded in it is the element of time. This work re-images the myth of Pandora’s Box, doubling back on two earlier works on the same subject.

The handmade felt, embroidery and ovoid shapes echo age-old female activities and ancient fertility rites. The regressive and progressive resonance held in the objects reflects a life-long dualism — never certain whether it increases fullness and sonority, or haunts like a box of unforeseen difficulties.
